UPDATE ON CURRENT WILDLIFE FILM ACADEMY STUDENTS

The Greater Kruger National Park is a huge wilderness area made up of the Kruger National Park and several private game reserves with a total of 2.2 million hectares in South AfricaOne of these private game reserves was the destination for June’s field trip, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience.

One of the highlights was the hyena den with two cubs and two adults that kept the students fascinated throughout the week and provided great filming opportunities. Wonderful sightings of elephants drinking, feeding in the Mopane woodlands, pushing over trees, and spraying their bodies with sand, made for excellent footage, and birdlife was plentiful. The students also came across a small herd of buffalo and were amazed by the wonderful sighting of two adult giraffe with a youngster of only a few months old.

Impressed by the vastness of the African wilderness, the glorious sunrises and sunsets, and the feel of the bush, the students are now hard at work in the editing suites.

NEWS FROM PAST STUDENTS

News from past student, Alice Clarke, alice@nhuafrica.com

“I attended the first Wildlife Film Academy course in May 2006. I came from London with a background in TV and a passion for animals and conservation work. The course was ideal for someone like me who was desperate to get into the wildlife filming industry but lacked the skills and experience. I had a brilliant time, learning so much is a short space of time and am still amazed that I produced my own 5 minute film at the end of it. I then went on to complete a 7 month internship with DewClaw Productions which helped me to consolidate what I had learnt on the course.

I have stayed on in Cape Town, surely the most beautiful city in the world, and this year I began working for NHU AFRICA as a production manager and editor. I’m currently working on a series with the Cheetah Outreach centre that is based in Stellenbosch (www.cheetah.co.za). We are filming a 13 part, true to life series on the fantastic work the dedicated women at Cheetah Outreach do to highlight the plight of the wild cheetah. The series concentrates on their cub rearing programme that raises cheetah ambassadors to be sent around the world to raise funds and awareness. I’ve got to say it’s a fairly awesome part of my job to spend time filming and playing with 6 week old cheetah cubs. We’ve been shooting for about a month now and they are growing up fast, full of mischief and adventure. It’s a great feeling to capture them discovering the world.

I’m working as a producer and director and editing too so I’ve found myself totally immersed in the project which is fantastic. The experience I have gained in the last year has been priceless and the opportunities I’ve have been offered, frankly, way beyond what I could of hoped for when I packed my bags and headed to Africa. I’d strongly recommend the Wildlife Film Academy course to anyone who has similar hopes and ambitions. The (global) wildlife filming industry is very small and can be very difficult to break into, the Wildlife Film Academy offers students a chance to get a foot in the door - what you do with it is up to you!”

Calling all past Wildlife Film Academy students, send us your news, we want to know what you have been up to since leaving the Academy and what you are currently working on.  Email info@wildlifefilmacademy.com  We will publish your update in our newsletter.
